Girl Tribe Gang brings you #FierceFemale Features to inspire and give you some fierce insight behind successful women who are doing incredible things.
Today, we’re talking with Caroline Huber, founder of Pure Skin Lab.
Girl Tribe Gang asked if she could take us behind the scenes of her entrepreneurial journey and share her insights into what life is like as a business owner.
Here is what she had to say:
Tell us the story behind Pure Skin Lab
From a young age I was intrigued by nature and its regeneration and beauty, discovering natural environments. I have a real love for the ocean and realise how significant it is that we look after our planet. I recently visited Madagascar and was overwhelmed by their culture: no processed food, no plastic, natural medicines and very low cancer rates. I believe if we expose ourselves to chemicals whether internally or externally it is detrimental to our health. I have suffered with acne and skin problems most of my adult life and have discovered that there are some amazing natural products that really work instead of the chemical filled brands.
I became interested in natural remedies and overall health when diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I found keeping fit and following a clean eating and dairy-free diet helped. I started yoga and was introduced to mindfulness and how this can help with anxiety, hormones and stress.
I studied aromatherapy but realised that making my own products while looking after four children was rather difficult, so began sourcing the best natural products for my family. This proved harder than one would think as I had to order from so many different companies to get natural shampoo, deodorant, body wash, toothpaste, sun cream etc and then felt guilty about my impact on the carbon footprint, excessive packaging and the damage to the environment.
This is when Pure Skin Lab was born as a one-stop shop for natural beauty and wellness in one delivery.
Who inspires you?
There are many people that inspire me for different reasons and interests.
For my love of nature it has to be Sir David Attenborough
For my fitness goals and balance – Gillian Michaels
For my desire to find inner peace and calm the Dalai Lama.
What motivates you?
Motivation for work is the sense of achievement and worth. Without this I would struggle.
Having 4 children in 5 years I was kept busy and felt a justification for not working. As they all started growing up and becoming independent, I knew I wanted to do something for me. I wanted to feel like I was my own person again, not just a mum or wife. It has been a nerve wracking start to the journey but all good fun and my confidence and self-worth is now growing.
What does success look like to you?
Success to me is finding a balance; being challenged in life – whether through work or personal goals – and still finding time for family, friends and me!
Having a new business means this can be difficult, but I’m hoping the hard work will pay off and allow more of a balance in the future.
What was your ‘light bulb moment’?
When I started to buy natural products for the whole family, I couldn’t find one place/shop to get it from, and the thought of all the carbon footprint just didn’t feel right. I had the thought of having a one stop shop, where busy mums could find everything in one place, also making sure all the products were truly natural and were not tested on animals. All in one delivery.
What is your mantra?
Love yourself and love your cells.
What is your golden nugget of wisdom you’d share with other women who are just starting out in business or aspiring to quit the 9-5?
A bit like having a baby… there’s never the right time, so just go for it. Take a deep breath and make that first step.
Acknowledge that it is daunting. You will feel nervous but you can do it. Think of it as a journey or a new chapter in your life that is for you.
Another important thing is take your time and be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
What is your number one #selfcare tip?
Make time for you and look after yourself.
As a working mum we tend to put everyone else first! Take time to focus on you and your health. My time is either getting out into nature and walking the dogs, or simply running a bath and adding my favourite essential oils.
Sometimes just stepping away from everything and everyone just for a short time is all we need to recharge. Practising mindfulness is another important way of getting through those overwhelming, stressful times.
Each month Girl Tribe Gang will celebrate the stories of fabulous women who are brilliant at what they do. The aim of this feature is to motivate women who are aspiring to quit the 9 – 5 or just starting out on their entrepreneurial journey.
The women in Girl Tribe Gang’s Fierce Female Feature are no stranger to spinning plates and the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of running their own business. Their determination, passion and spirit is inspirational and representative of the huge variety of talent and ambition within each and every woman in the UK.
