#FierceFemale Feature With Mia Sohel of Iconic Design

Girl Tribe Gang brings you #FierceFemale Features to inspire and give you some fierce insight behind successful women who are doing incredible things.

Today, we’re talking with Mia Sohel, founder of Iconic Design.

Girl Tribe Gang asked if she could take us behind the scenes of her entrepreneurial journey and share her insights into what life is like as a business owner.

Here is what she had to say:

Tell us the story behind Iconic Design

I’ve always been passionate about anything creative ever since I can remember. I’ve worked as a designer for a range of companies, from in-house to agencies – but i always knew that I wanted to work for myself. In 2017 I took the big step and created Iconic Design.

I wanted to create a design company different to the others within the industry. My vision was a design company that wasn’t an agency, and one that didn’t have additional fees flying towards its clients from every direction. I wanted to create a business that reflected in-house workings but with agency values. I wanted a business that was in touch with it’s clientele, where the sole aim is to understand their needs & produce high quality work that fits the brief right down to the last detail & at the right price.

Who inspires you?

I’d definitely say my family. Almost everyone in my family is self employed and have been since they were young, doing things like digital marketing, wholesaling, bespoke baby gifts, mechanics, designer children’s wear, and catering! The list goes on, but each family member has shown me that it IS possible to build a business and be successful as well as having that all important freedom & flexibility.

If I had to choose another inspiration, it would definitely be Coco Chanel. She believed that simplicity is key – which is what we believe too!

What motivates you?

Simply my brand, Iconic. I LOVE what I do and look forward to seeing what new design challenge each day brings. I’m motivated by planning new, exciting things for Iconic and helping clients bring their vision to life.

I’ve been a Graphic Designer all my life and that’s where my passion lies, so working in my own design company is the ultimate dream for me.

What does success look like to you?

Being happy and content.

I remember being unhappy in previous jobs and dreading the week ahead, whereas now I never feel like that. I think that being mentally healthier and genuinely happier within myself, as well as being the boss of my own time, is much more successful than anything else.

What was your ‘light bulb moment’?

When I worked in previous agencies I never really understood the need for account managers/execs. I thought that it was a long process to send the design work to the account handler for them to then send to the clients, then come back with amends for me to repeat the process again.

In my opinion it was just wasting time and money when direct contact would be so much easier. I preferred to speak directly to the client and understand what wasn’t working and what was, then send the amends to them straight away. I understand what they wanted from a design perspective whereas many of the account handlers I worked with didn’t have a clue!

So, the light bulb went on and I thought let’s start a design company where the clients deal directly with the designers. So far we’ve been really successful, we get a lot of positive feedback as it’s cutting down time and reducing costs significantly.

What is your mantra?

You only live once! – I say Yolo to everything!

What is your golden nugget of wisdom you’d share with other women who are just starting out in business or aspiring to quit the 9-5?

I’d definitely say don’t be afraid to ask for help when you first start out and speak to anyone and everyone. Be a little cheeky, ask for little favours, see if someone knows someone who may be of value to your business. At the end of the day people will be willing to help and it doesn’t hurt to ask, you have nothing to lose!

What is your number one #selfcare tip?

Don’t let yourself get stressed! Remember that you left the 9 to 5 for a reason – you want happiness, freedom and flexibility.

Remember you are your own boss and if something feels too stressful, take a step back & have some time out, whether you pop to the shop to break the day up or go for a walk – getting out of your working environment and breaking off really helps to destress and reinforces why you started your own business in the first place.
